This decision to conscientiously put the photos away starts with a very sad story. A simple computer that falters and here are the photos of the first three years of the youngest who fly away. If only we had taken the time to save the photos or print them. Such a lesson makes you change your habits in no time. Now I have integrated a few steps (ultimately not that restricting) so that all the photos of our family life do not disappear with a single click.

First step: regularly upload your photos

Today the memory cards of our devices are capable of taking an increasing number of photos. The storage space is so large that we don't even think of emptying it between two events. In the end, the photos follow each other and if we wait until the memory card is full, we forget the reasons and the details of the photos taken. Transferring your photos to the computer after each event allows you not to forget the anecdotes and information related to the decision to take this or that photo. This also prevents disasters like the loss of a memory card. Finally, do not forget that your camera is not the only one to recover images: do the same with your smartphone as with all the photos transmitted by email or social networks.

Second step: sort out

Thanks to digitalization, the photos taken are no longer necessarily the fruit of intense reflection. The immateriality allows you to press the shutter button as often as you want without asking questions, resulting in an incalculable number of photos to organize. This is the other side of the coin and for some, the number is so scary that they stop at this stage and say that they will do it later (as much to say never). If you really want to take pleasure in viewing your photos and find the rare pearl to frame, you will have to be intransigent and take this step very seriously. All failed, blurry, duplicated photos that are of no interest must be put in the trash. Without hesitation.

Keep in mind that the final result can be the subject of a beautiful photo album like here with the Memory book kit proposed by Cheerz

Third step: organize according to people, places, and events

After the second step, you should have almost halved the amount of photos to be processed. It is now a question of associating them with as much information as possible to develop your future albums. Image management tools built into computers usually have things like identifying people and places. You can also enter a legend and tags, always with the aim of easily creating albums. To give a specific example, by adding the tag “Party” for all the photos related to Christmas, birthdays or Halloween, I can find and group with a single click all the festive photos that can be the subject of a Photo album. When the photos are complete, choose a display mode pleasing to the eye as folders for each month and year. or for special events such as marriage or baptism.

Fourth step: remember to save… several times

Following the cruel experience of the computer which dies taking away all the most precious photos, I now store all my files in a hard disk. It only takes a few minutes but the time taken is well worth the effort. For any important file, it is in any case necessary to have at least two different storage locations. It can be a hard drive like for me but also DVDs, USB keys or the cloud. Some establish real storage systems with binders by year grouping together the photos printed with the associated DVD.

And for your holiday photos, sort, print and put everything in a beautiful DIY box!

Step five: share

Once your photos are in a safe place (and rather twice than one), the last step is to sublimate all the recovered photos. Thanks to the elements noted for each image, you will be able to create virtual or real albums with a single click. You may wonder what is the point of a photo if it has been forgotten in a file on your computer for several years so do not hesitate to show and get these documents out of the closet. It is not compulsory to print all your photographs on paper, but it must be recognized that photo books are easier to handle, especially by children. Intangible solutions such as online albums are also a solution to share with your loved ones these moments captured by the lens. If the downloading of photos must be done regularly for the reasons explained in the first chapter, the other steps may be postponed. Preferably choose a time each month to sort and organize your photos so that the task remains affordable and less frightening. Certain times of the year will bring a larger batch of photos: this is the case for the long holidays, for example. You can therefore determine in advance that in September a significant amount of time will be devoted to archiving your photos.
